Fun Facts
1. Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night from his bedroom window. He loved painting nature so much that he often painted outside at night, sometimes attaching candles to his hat so he could see his canvas in the dark!
2. Claude Monet built an entire water garden just to paint it. He was so obsessed with painting water lilies, bridges, and reflections that he hired six full-time gardeners to tend to his pond and keep the floating flowers perfectly clean for his artwork.
3. Leonardo da Vinci was a left-handed genius who wrote backward. He wrote many of his personal notes and ideas in "mirror writing," meaning you have to hold the page up to a mirror to read what he wrote from right to left!
4. Pablo Picasso created over 50,000 works of art. That includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, and prints. If you created one art piece every single day, it would take you over 136 years to make as much art as Picasso did.
5. Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling standing up, not lying down. Many people think he painted on his back, but he actually built custom wooden scaffolding and reached straight up above his head for four years, causing paint to constantly drip onto his face.
6. Frida Kahlo painted self-portraits with her favorite pets. Her paintings frequently feature her pet spider monkeys, parrots, stray dogs, and even a pet fawn (baby deer) that roamed freely around her home in Mexico.
7. Michelangelo destroyed most of his own preliminary sketches. Despite creating thousands of studies and preparatory drawings for masterworks like the Sistine Chapel ceiling, Michelangelo routinely burned his sketches in massive bonfires before his death to prevent anyone from seeing the struggle and imperfect draft work behind his finished creations.
