Fun Facts

1. Babies are born with around 300 bones. That's nearly 100 more than adults! As babies grow, many of these smaller bones fuse together to form the 206 bones of the adult skeleton.

2. Newborns don't produce real tears when they cry. While babies cry a lot to communicate, their tear ducts are still developing at birth. They make enough moisture to keep their eyes healthy, but actual watery tears don't start flowing until they are around 1 to 3 months old.

3. Babies are born without hard kneecaps. Instead of solid bone, a baby's kneecaps are made of soft cartilage. The cartilage slowly turns into hard bone as they grow, fully hardening around age 3 to 5.

4. A baby's sense of smell is super sharp. Newborns can identify their mother by her unique scent alone within just a few days of being born, even before their eyes can focus clearly on her face!

5. Newborns have a automatic "stepping" reflex. If you hold a newborn upright with their feet touching a flat surface, they will naturally move their feet in a walking motion! This reflex usually disappears after a few months as their brain matures.

6. Babies double their weight in just five months. Human babies grow faster in their first year than at any other time in their lives. By their first birthday, most babies have tripled their birth weight!

7. A baby's heart beats almost twice as fast as yours. A newborn's heart pumps at around 120 to 160 beats per minute! In comparison, a grown-up’s heart usually beats between 60 and 100 times per minute while resting.
