Fun Facts
1. Castles were built as giant stone fortresses, not just fancy homes! While fairy tales make castles look like luxury palaces, they were actually heavy-duty military bases. Lords built them out of thick stone to protect their land, soldiers, and townspeople from attacking enemies.
2. A heavy iron gate called a portcullis guarded the entrance. The main gateway into a castle was heavily defended. Aside from a thick wooden door, castles had a spiked iron gate called a portcullis that could be slammed shut instantly using ropes and chains if enemies tried to rush inside.
3. Moats were water-filled ditches meant to stop invaders. Many castles were surrounded by a deep ditch filled with water called a moat. It stopped enemy soldiers from digging tunnels underneath the castle walls and forced them across a narrow bridge that could be pulled up in seconds!
4. Castle toilets dropped waste straight into the moat. In medieval times, castle bathrooms (called privies or gardrobes) were tiny stone rooms built into the outer walls with a simple hole that dropped waste straight down into the moat or river below.
5. Spiral staircases always spin in the same direction for a reason. If you visit an old castle, you will notice the stone spiral staircases almost always curve clockwise as you go up. This gave right-handed defenders plenty of room to swing their swords down at attackers, while enemy soldiers climbing up couldn't swing their swords easily!
6. There are thousands of castles still standing in Europe today. Countries like Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Japan are filled with historic castles. Wales alone has more castles per square mile than almost anywhere else in the world!
7. Some castles were carved directly out of solid rock caves. While most castles were stacked up from thousands of heavy stone blocks, Predjama Castle in Slovenia was built right into the mouth of a massive cave halfway up a giant cliff face, making it nearly impossible to conquer!
