Fun Facts
1. Ancient Aerial Aces: Dragonflies are true prehistoric survivors. They buzzed around the Earth more than 300 million years ago, long before dinosaurs ever walked the planet!
2. Helicopter Flight Masters: Dragonflies are incredible stunt flyers. They can hover in place like a helicopter, fly backwards, zip upside down, and zoom through the air at speeds up to 30 miles per hour.
3. Super-Powered Vision: Their heads are basically giant eyeballs! A dragonfly’s eyes are made up of nearly 30,000 tiny lenses put together, giving them an almost complete 360-degree view of the world.
4. The Ultimate Aerial Hunters: Dragonflies are fierce hunters with an incredible 95% hunting success rate. They use their long, basket-like legs to catch mosquitoes and midzes right out of the air while flying.
5. Underwater Beginnings: Even though adult dragonflies spend their time zooming through the sky, they actually start their lives as underwater water bugs called nymphs that can live in ponds for up to several years!
6. Four Independent Wings: A dragonfly has four separate wings, and each wing can move all by itself. This lets them twist, turn, and change directions in the blink of an eye.
7. A Heart-Shaped Romance: When adult dragonflies mate, they sometimes link their bodies together in mid-air to form a shape that looks just like a flying heart!
