Fun Facts

1. Mountains of Sand: A dune is a giant hill or ridge of sand formed by the wind. They can be found in deserts, along ocean beaches, and even beside large lakes!

2. Nomadic Wanderers: Dunes are constantly on the move! As the wind blows sand grains up one side and they tumble down the other, whole dunes can slowly crawl across the landscape like giant, sleepy giants over months and years.

3. Singing Sand Dunes: Some dry sand dunes actually make a loud humming, booming, or whistling sound when the wind blows across them or when people slide down their slopes!

4. Nature's Sea Walls: Beach dunes are super important protectors. Their rolling hills and the grass roots growing in them act as a natural shield, protecting coastal towns and homes from crashing ocean waves during big storms.

5. Desert Skyscrapers: While beach dunes are usually smaller, desert sand dunes can grow to be massive! Some deserts feature towering dunes that are taller than a 50-story skyscraper.

6. Trapped Water Secrets: Even though deserts are very dry, underground moisture can get trapped beneath large dunes, sometimes creating hidden desert oases where palm trees and fresh water spring up.

7. Built by Wind Power: It takes a lot of breeze to build a dune. The wind needs to be strong enough to pick up loose sand grains and carry them along the ground in a bouncing motion called saltation.
