A falcon is any of several birds of prey, related to hawks, that hunt during the day
and have long powerful wings and a hooked beak.
Fun Facts
1. They are the fastest animals on the planet! The Peregrine Falcon can dive through the air at speeds over 200 miles per hour (320 km/h). That is faster than a race car!
2. They wear built-in sunglasses. Falcons have dark stripes under their eyes called "malar stripes." These work just like the black glare-stripes football players paint on their cheeks to block bright sunlight.
3. They have special nose cones like jet engines. When diving at top speeds, air rushing into a bird's nose could hurt its lungs. Falcons have tiny cone-shaped bumps inside their nostrils that slow down the airflow so they can breathe easily while zooming.
4.They bite with a special "falcon tooth." Unlike hawks or eagles, falcons have a sharp, tiny notch on their upper beak called a tomial tooth. They use it to quickly break the neck of their prey.
5. They have superpower eyesight. A falcon can spot a small bird or mouse from more than a mile away. Their eyes work like tiny, powerful binoculars!
6. They live everywhere except Antarctica. Falcons are world travelers! You can find them living on every continent except icy Antarctica, from hot deserts to tall city skyscrapers.
7. They hunt in mid-air. Falcons don't usually catch food on the ground. They track down other birds, bats, and insects right out of the sky while flying.
