Fun Facts

1. Ancient fountains worked using gravity! Long before electric water pumps were invented, ancient Romans used gravity to pull mountain water down through pipes so it would shoot up out of fountains in city squares.

2. People throw millions of coins into them for luck. Tossing a coin into a fountain over your shoulder is a famous tradition! In Rome, Italy, people throw around $4,000 in coins into the famous Trevi Fountain every single day, which is collected and donated to feed families in need.

3. Nature has its own hot water fountains. Geysers are natural fountains made by the Earth! Deep underground rocks heat up water until it boils and shoots explosive jets of hot water and steam high into the air.

4. They recycled water long before it was cool. Instead of using fresh water continuously, most fountains recycle the same basin of water over and over using hidden pumps.

5. Ancient people used them for drinking water, not decoration. The very first fountains weren't made to look pretty. Thousands of years ago, people built public fountains so whole towns could collect fresh drinking water for cooking and washing.

6. Fountains can cool down an entire park. When water sprays into the air, tiny droplets evaporate and absorb heat from the surrounding air, acting like natural outdoor air conditioners!

7. Whales have living "fountains" on their backs. When whales pop up to breathe, warm air blasts out of their blowholes and turns into a spray cloud that looks just like a ocean fountain.
