Fun Facts

1. Baby goats are called "kids"—just like human children. Female goats are called does or nannies, males are called bucks or billys, and newborn goats are officially called kids. Right after birth, a kid can stand up and take its first steps within just a few minutes!

2. Goats are incredible acrobats and mountain climbers. Wild goats like the Ibex can climb near-vertical rock cliffs and hop across tiny ledges. Their hooves feature a hard outer ridge that grips tiny stone cracks and a soft, rubbery center pad that acts like a suction cup!

3. "Fainting" goats don't actually pass out. A special breed called the Myotonic goat has a genetic condition that causes its muscles to freeze up for a few seconds whenever it gets startled. The goat remains fully conscious the entire time, but its stiff legs make it tip over like a wooden statue!

4. Goats don't have top front teeth. Instead of sharp upper incisors, a goat's upper mouth has a tough, thick pad of skin called a dental pad. They use their bottom teeth to press plant material against this pad, tearing off grass and leaves rather than biting straight through them!

5. Goats have a four-chambered stomach to digest tough plants. Because goats eat tough leaves, bark, and weeds, their specialized digestive system ferments and breaks down tough plant fibers in four connected stomach compartments (rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum).

6. Legend says goats discovered coffee in ancient Ethiopia. According to popular folklore, a 9th-century goat herder named Kaldi noticed his goats became energetic and started "dancing" after eating bright red berries from a wild bush. Kaldi tried the berries himself, discovering the stimulant effects of the coffee bean!

7. Goats don't actually eat tin cans or trash. A common cartoon myth claims goats eat metal cans, but they are actually very picky eaters! Because they use their sensitive lips to explore their environment, they might nibble on paper or tin cans to test for tasty glue or food residue, but they don't actually swallow the metal.
