Fun Facts
1. The oldest guitar-like instrument is over 3,500 years old. Discovered in Egypt, a stone-carved, three-stringed instrument called a tanbur belonged to a royal singer named Har-Mose. It featured a polished wooden soundbox and a long neck, looking remarkably like an ancient ancestor of today's guitar!
2. Early guitar strings were made from animal intestines. Before steel and nylon strings were invented in the 20th century, guitarists used catgut strings, which were actually spun from the tough, flexible intestinal linings of sheep or cows!
3. The world's smallest playable guitar is smaller than a single human cell. Scientists at Cornell University built a microscopic "nanoguitar" out of crystalline silicon that measured just 10 micrometers long. Its tiny strings are only 100 atoms wide and can be plucked using invisible laser beams!
4. Fret wires on the neck change the pitch by changing string length. The metal ridges along a guitar neck are called frets. Pressing a string down behind a fret shortens the part of the string that can vibrate—and shorter vibrating strings make higher-pitched musical notes!
5. The world's largest playable guitar weighed over 2,000 pounds. Built by high school students in Texas, the record-breaking giant electric guitar measured over 43 feet long—about as tall as a four-story building!
6. A standard guitar has 6 strings, but some have 12, 18, or even 42! While most guitars feature six tuned strings (E-A-D-G-B-E), a 12-string guitar pairs every string with a twin tuned an octave higher for a ringing, orchestral sound. Custom luthiers have even built wild instruments like the "Pikasso Guitar," which features 42 strings across 4 separate necks!
7. An acoustic guitar's body acts like a physical amplifier. When you pluck a string, it vibrates and transfers those movements through the wooden bridge into the hollow body. The trapped air bounces around inside and shoots out of the soundhole, making the quiet string sound loud and full!
