Fun Facts

1. One of the Oldest String Instruments: Harps are ancient musical instruments! Archaeologists have found pictures and carvings of early harps painted on the walls of ancient Egyptian tombs that are thousands of years old.

2. Open-Face String Design: Unlike guitars or violins where the strings lie flat against a wooden neck, a harp has an open frame. This lets you see and pluck both sides of the strings freely with your fingers!

3. A Whole Lot of Strings: A big concert harp is packed with about 47 strings! Each string is tuned to a different note of the musical scale, giving the instrument a huge range of high and low notes.

4. Color-Coded Secrets: With so many strings, it can be tricky to find the right note! To make it easier, harp makers color certain strings: all the C strings are red, and all the F strings are blue, acting like a map for the player's fingers.

5. Foot Pedals for Magic Changes: If you look at the bottom of a concert harp, you will see seven pedals! The player presses these pedals with their feet to tighten or loosen the strings while playing, allowing them to change keys and play sharp or flat notes.

6.Plucking, Not Bowing: Unlike cellos or violins that use a horsehair bow to make sound, harp players use their fingers (usually just the thumbs and first four fingers, skipping the pinkies!) to gently pluck the strings.

7. Angelic Sound in Movies: Harps are famous for producing a dreamy, shimmering, and magical sound. In cartoons and movies, whenever a character falls asleep or has a magical flashback, the music usually features a dramatic, sliding harp chord called a glissando!
