Fun Facts
1. They are one of humanity's oldest tools. The earliest knives were made over 2.5 million years ago by early humans, who chipped away at volcanic glass (obsidian) or flint rocks to create sharp cutting edges long before metals were discovered!
2. Table knives have rounded tips because of a French King. Legend says King Louis XIV of France was annoyed by guests picking their teeth with sharp knife tips at the dinner table, so in 1669 he ordered all dinner knives to have their points ground down into smooth, rounded ends.
3. Volcanic glass makes blades sharper than steel. Knives made from obsidian (natural volcanic glass) can have an edge thousands of times thinner than modern razor blades. Some specialized eye surgeons even use obsidian scalpels today!
4. The Swiss Army Knife was created for soldiers. In the late 1800s, the Swiss military needed a compact tool for soldiers to open canned food and disassemble their rifles. A knife maker created a multi-tool design that included a blade, can opener, and screwdriver all in one handle.
5. Japanese chef knives are inspired by samurai swords. Traditional Japanese kitchen knives are forged using layering techniques similar to those used by ancient blacksmiths to craft sharp, durable katana swords for samurai warriors.
6. Different knife shapes do completely different jobs. Chef knives have curved blades for rocking back and forth to chop vegetables, bread knives have serrated saw-like teeth to cut through crusts without squishing the loaf, and paring knives have tiny blades for delicate peeling.
7. Astronauts carry knives in space. Spacecraft survival kits include multi-purpose utility knives. If an astronaut's capsule lands in a remote forest or sea after re-entering Earth's atmosphere, the knife helps them clear brush or cut safety lines!
