Fun Facts

1. They are the only truly social wild cats. Most wild cats—like tigers, jaguars, and leopards—live all by themselves. Lions are unique because they live in big family groups called prides, which usually consist of related females, their cubs, and a few males!

2. Their roars can be heard 5 miles away. A adult male lion’s roar is so loud (around 114 decibels) that animals up to five miles (8 kilometers) away can hear it echoing across the plains to declare their territory.

3. Girls do most of the hunting. Female lions (lionesses) do about 85% to 90% of the hunting for the pride! They work together in clever teams, surrounding their prey in the tall grass before springing an ambush.

4. They are professional nappers. Lions spend up to 20 hours a day sleeping or resting! Because hunting takes a massive amount of energy, they conserve power during the hot daytime and become active at night.

5. A mane shows off health and power. Male lions grow thick, impressive manes around their neck and head. Darker and fuller manes usually mean the male is healthy, well-fed, and strong, which attracts females and frightens rival males.

6. They aren't actually the "King of the Jungle." Even though they carry the famous nickname, lions don't live in jungles at all! They live in open grasslands, savannas, and scrub woodlands across Africa (and a tiny population in India).

7. Baby lion cubs are born with camouflage spots. When lion cubs are born, their golden coats have faint dark spots and rosettes. This camouflage helps them hide among rocks and bushes from predators while their parents hunt.
