Fun Facts

1. Giant Earth Bumps: Mountains are massive landforms that stretch high up into the sky, sticking up much higher than the surrounding land like giant rocky bumps on the Earth's surface.

2. Built by Crashing Continents: Mountains are formed over millions of years when giant sections of the Earth's crust (called tectonic plates) smash into each other, pushing the ground upward like a slow-motion car crash!

3. The Highest Giant: The tallest mountain on Earth is Mount Everest in the Himalayas. It reaches over 29,000 feet into the sky—so tall that its peak is higher than the cruising altitude of a commercial airplane!

4. Snowy Peaks All Year: Even if it is warm and sunny at the bottom of a mountain, it gets much colder the higher you climb. That is why the tops of tall mountains are covered in snow and ice all year round.

5. Mountain Ranges: Mountains rarely live alone! They usually hang out together in long chains or groups called mountain ranges, like the Rocky Mountains in North America or the Andes in South America.

6. Volcanic Mountains: Not all mountains are made by crashing rocks. Some mountains are volcanoes formed when hot, melted rock (magma) from deep underground erupts and piles up over and over again until it hardens into a giant peak.

7. Underwater Giants: The tallest mountain from base to peak isn't actually Everest—it's Mauna Kea in Hawaii! Most of it is hidden underwater, and if you measured it from the very bottom of the ocean floor, it would be taller than Everest!
