FACTS ABOUT: parrots parrot

Definition: parrot  Play parrotpronunciation  A parrot is a bird with feathers of bright colors. Many parrots are bright green with other colors
on their head. Parrots have short curved beaks, and they have strong legs. Parrots can often imitate people's
words and other sounds.

Fun Facts

1. They don't have vocal cords. Even though parrots can talk and copy human speech, they don't have vocal cords like we do! Instead, they control the muscles in a special voice box organ at the base of their windpipe called a syrinx to mimic sounds.

2. They use their beaks as a third hand. A parrot's upper beak is hinged directly to its skull, making it super flexible and strong. When climbing up branches or cage bars, they use their powerful beak to hook on and pull their whole body weight up!

3. They eat with their feet like hands. Parrots are the only birds that can pick up food with their toes and lift it directly to their beak to eat! They have zygodactyl feet, meaning two toes point forward and two point backward for an extra-strong grip.

4. They can live as long as humans. Large parrot species like macaws and cockatoos can easily live between 50 to 80 years in captivity—meaning a pet parrot can be a lifelong friend that grows old right alongside you!

5. Some wild parrots eat clay for breakfast. In the Amazon rainforest, hundreds of wild macaws flock to mineral-rich riverbanks to lick and eat raw clay! Scientists believe the minerals in the clay help settle their stomachs after eating toxic seeds in the jungle.

6. Parrot feathers have built-in sun protection. The bright red, yellow, and green pigments in parrot feathers contain special antibacterial chemicals called psittacofulvins. These unique compounds keep their feathers strong and protect them from damaging sunlight and feather-degrading bacteria!

7. They taste food with the roof of their mouth. Parrots have very few taste buds on their tongue—instead, most of their taste buds are located on the soft roof of their mouth near the back of their throat!
