Fun Facts
1. Pigs are smarter than dogs! Animal experts rank pigs as the fourth smartest animal on the planet—right after humans, dolphins, and chimpanzees. They can learn their own names, solve mazes, play video games with a joystick, and memorize tricks faster than most dogs!
2. They roll in mud to stay cool, not to get dirty. Pigs don't have sweat glands, so they can't sweat like humans do to cool down. Coating themselves in wet mud acts like natural sunscreen and a cooling air conditioner to protect their delicate skin!
3. Pigs are actually incredibly clean animals. Given enough space, pigs will keep their sleeping and eating areas spotless, designating a bathroom spot as far away from their bed as possible!
4. Newborn piglets learn to recognize their mother's voice. Mother pigs (called sows) sing softly to their piglets while nursing them! Newborn piglets can recognize their mom’s specific voice call within just 36 hours of being born.
5. They communicate using over 20 distinct sounds. Pigs have a complex language made up of squeals, grunts, and oinks! They use different noises to say "I'm hungry," "Let's play," or to warn others of danger, and a pig's squeal can reach a deafening 115 decibels—louder than a jet engine!
6. Pigs can run surprisingly fast. An adult domestic pig can run a 7-minute mile, sprinting at top speeds of up to 11 miles per hour (18 km/h) in a zigzag pattern to outrun predators!
7. Pigs have fantastic memories. Pigs have exceptional long-term memory! They can remember where food is hidden months after seeing it once, recognize other pigs they haven't seen in years, and even trick other pigs to steal their hidden food stashes.
