Fun Facts

1. Their front teeth never stop growing. A rat’s front teeth (incisors) grow continuously throughout its life. To keep them from getting too long, rats constantly gnaw on hard objects like wood, ropes, and cardboard to wear them down.

2. Rats are super smart and can learn tricks. Rats have incredible memories and problem-solving skills! They can learn their own names, solve complex mazes, play fetch, and even perform agility tricks like a trained dog.

3. Rats are surprisingly clean animals. Even though they sometimes get a bad reputation, rats spend several hours every day grooming themselves and each other, just like house cats do!

4. They can squeeze through tiny gaps. A rat can squeeze its entire body through an opening as small as a quarter! As long as their head can fit through a hole, the rest of their flexible body can usually slide right through.

5. Heroic rats sniff out landmines. Giant pouch rats, known as "HeroRats," are trained by scientists to use their incredible sense of smell to safely find buried landmines in former war zones, saving thousands of human lives.

6. Rats are excellent swimmers. Rats can tread water for up to three days straight and hold their breath underwater for several minutes. They can even swim up drainpipes into plumbing!

7. They take care of sick friends. Rats are deeply social and empathetic creatures. If a rat in their group gets sick or injured, healthy rats will bring them food, groom them, and snuggle up to keep them warm.
