Fun Facts
1. The ancient Romans built over 50,000 miles of paved roads. Over 2,000 years ago, Roman engineers built stone roads so well that "all roads lead to Rome." Some of these original ancient stone highways are still used by people today!
2. Some roads can play musical tunes when you drive on them. "Singing roads" have special grooved strips carved into the asphalt. When car tires roll over these rumble strips at the right speed, the vibrations play a tune like America the Beautiful or classical songs!
3. Cats' eyes help drivers see in the dark. Invented in 1934, safety reflectors embedded in the middle of roads are called "cat's eyes." They reflect car headlights back to drivers at night, mimicking how real cat eyes glow in the dark.
4. The longest road in the world stretches almost from pole to pole. The Pan-American Highway is a giant network of roads that measures nearly 19,000 miles long! It runs all the way from Prudhoe Bay in icy Alaska down to the tip of Argentina in South America.
5. Asphalt is recyclable! The black pavement used to pave most neighborhood streets is actually the most recycled material in North America. When old roads are scraped up, the pavement is melted down and reused to build fresh new streets.
6. Lombard Street in San Francisco has 8 sharp hair-pin turns in one block. Known as the "crookedest street in the world," Lombard Street was built with steep, zig-zagging curves down a steep hill to make it safe for cars and pedestrians to descend without rolling too fast.
7. The German Autobahn has highway sections with no speed limits. On certain open stretches of Germany's famous highway system, the Autobahn, there is no mandatory speed limit, allowing sports cars to safely zoom along as fast as fast trains!
