Fun Facts

1. The word "salad" comes from the Latin word for salt. Ancient Romans and Greeks gathered fresh raw veggies and sprinkled them with salty oil and vinegar dressings. The Latin root word sal means "salt," which eventually grew into the word salata!

2. Caesar salad was actually invented in Mexico, not Rome. Famous chef Caesar Cardini created the first Caesar salad in 1924 at his restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico. When he ran low on kitchen ingredients during a busy holiday weekend, he tossed together lettuce, garlic, croutons, parmesan, and olive oil tableside!

3. Oil and vinegar dressings don't mix without a secret helper. Oil and vinegar naturally separate because oil is lighter than water. To keep them mixed into a smooth salad dressing, chefs add an emulsifier like mustard or honey to lock the liquid droplets together!

4. Spinach is a super-leaf packed with iron. Dark leafy greens like spinach and kale are packed with vitamins and iron that help your red blood cells carry oxygen all around your body—giving your muscles and brain super energy!

5. A salad spinner uses centrifugal force to dry lettuce. Wet lettuce makes salad dressing slide right off! When you pump a salad spinner, it spins the lettuce basket super fast. The outward force (centrifugal force) flings all the water droplets off the leaves and onto the outer bowl walls.

6. Not all salads contain veggies. A salad is technically any dish made of mixed bite-sized ingredients tossed with a sauce or dressing. That means fruit salads, pasta salads, potato salads, and even dessert Jell-O salads count as real salads!

7. Croutons were invented to save stale bread. French cooks hundreds of years ago hated throwing away hardened, leftover bread. They sliced the stale loaves into small cubes, baked them with butter and herbs, and created crunchy croutons (croûte means "crust" in French)!
