Fun Facts

1. Gentle Giants of the Forest: Sequoias are among the largest and most majestic living things on the entire planet. They are massive evergreen trees that grow so tall they look like wooden skyscrapers reaching up into the clouds!

2. Tree Cousins: There are actually two main types of giant sequoias. The Giant Sequoia grows on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California and is the biggest tree by volume, while its close cousin, the Coast Redwood, grows along the Pacific coast and is the tallest tree in the world.

3. Mind-Boggling Heights: Coast redwoods can grow taller than a 35skyscraper—reaching over 300 feet (90 meters) high! That is taller than the Statue of Liberty.

4. Super-Sized Trunks: The trunk of a giant sequoia is so wide that if you and ten of your friends stood in a circle holding hands, you still wouldn't be able to wrap your arms all the way around it! Some trunks are over 30 feet wide.

5. Ancient Time Travelers: Sequoias live an extraordinarily long time. While human children grow up and become grandparents, a sequoia keeps growing right through the centuries! Many of the giant sequoias alive today sprouted from tiny seeds over 2,000 to 3,000 years ago, meaning they were alive during the time of ancient Rome.

6. Fireproof Bark: You might think a forest fire would destroy a tree, but giant sequoias have a superpower: thick, spongy bark that can grow up to two feet thick! This bark has no sap and acts like an insulated blanket, protecting the living tree inside from hot flames.

7. Baby-Sized Seeds: Even though sequoias grow into massive giants, their seeds start out shockingly small. A single sequoia cone is about the size of a chicken egg, and its seeds are so tiny and lightweight that 3,000 seeds together weigh less than a single ounce—about the same as a single paperclip!
