Fun Facts

1. T-shirts are named after the alphabet! If you lay a standard T-shirt perfectly flat on the floor and spread the sleeves out, the body and the sleeves make the exact shape of the capital letter "T."

2. Buttons are on opposite sides for men and women. Hundreds of years ago, rich women had right-handed servants dress them, so tailors put the buttons on the left side to make it easier for the servant to reach. Men dressed themselves, so their buttons were placed on the right side!

3. The first printed "graphic tee" advertised a famous movie. Before the 1930s, almost all shirts were totally plain. In 1939, the makers of the famous movie The Wizard of Oz printed the movie's name onto plain shirts to advertise it, inventing the first promotional graphic tee!

4. T-shirts used to be considered strictly underwear. In the early 1900s, the United States Navy issued them to sailors to wear underneath their heavy, scratchy wool uniforms to absorb sweat. No one wore them in public until movie stars started doing it in the 1950s!

5. The Polo shirt was actually invented for tennis. French tennis champion René Lacoste got tired of wearing stiff, long-sleeved dress shirts with ties on the tennis court. In the 1920s, he invented a soft, stretchy, short-sleeved shirt with an unstarched collar to stay cool.

6. Tie-dye is an ancient art form. Brightly colored tie-dye shirts became super popular in the United States in the 1960s, but people in India, Japan, and Africa have been tying, folding, and dyeing fabric to make incredible patterns for over a thousand years!

7. That little loop on the back of a collar has a name. The small fabric loop on the back of a nice dress shirt is called a locker loop. It was invented for sailors and college students so they could hang their shirts on a locker hook without them getting wrinkled!
