Fun Facts

1. Snakes smell the air using their forked tongues. When a snake flicks its tongue out, it collects tiny scent particles floating in the air. It then presses its tongue against a special organ in the roof of its mouth called the Jacobson’s organ to figure out what scents (like food or predators) are nearby!

2. They don't have eyelids and can't blink. Snakes never close their eyes—even when they sleep! Instead of flexible eyelids, their eyes are protected by a clear, see-through scale called a brille or "spectacle" that gets replaced whenever they shed their skin.

3. Snakes can swallow food bigger than their own heads. A snake's jawbones aren't fused together like ours. Instead, their upper and lower jaws are connected with ultra-stretchy ligaments, allowing them to open their mouths amazingly wide to swallow eggs, frogs, or rodents whole!

4. Some snakes can "see" heat in total darkness. Pit vipers, pythons, and boas have special heat-sensing holes (called pit organs) on their faces between their eyes and nostrils. These pits detect infrared thermal radiation, letting them spot warm-blooded prey even on pitch-black nights!

5. They shed their skin to grow bigger. Because a snake's skin doesn't stretch forever as it grows, it periodically outgrows its outer layer. The snake rubs its nose against rough rocks or bark to peel the old skin inside-out, emerging with a brand-new, shiny coat underneath!

6. Most snakes are harmless to humans. Out of more than 3,900 different species of snakes on Earth, only about 600 are venomous—and only a small fraction of those pose any real danger to people. Most snakes are shy creatures that help farmers by eating pest insects and mice!

7. Snakes don't have ears, but they "hear" through ground vibrations. Snakes don't have external ear openings, but they have inner ear structures connected directly to their jawbones. When animals walk nearby, the vibrations travel through the ground, up the snake's jaw, and into its ears!
