Fun Facts

1. The word "suitcase" literally means a case for suits! When suitcases were first invented in the late 1800s, they were designed specifically for wealthy travelers to carry flat, pressed suits and fancy dresses without getting them wrinkled on long train trips!

2. Suitcases with wheels were invented surprisingly late. People have been traveling for thousands of years, but rolling luggage wasn't invented until 1970! An American luggage company executive named Bernard Sadow put four small caster wheels and a leather strap onto a heavy suitcase after dragging his heavy bags through an airport.

3. The telescopic handle came even later. In 1987, a commercial airline pilot named Robert Plath attached two wheels and a long, pull-up metal handle to a vertical suitcase. He called his invention the Rollaboard, and soon every flight attendant and traveler wanted one!

4. Airport conveyor belts sort bags using 3D barcode scanners. When you check a suitcase at the airport, a sticker with a special barcode is wrapped around the handle. Giant automated conveyor belts shoot laser scanners from every angle to read the code and send your bag to the right airplane gate automatically!

5. Ride-on suitcases turn packing into a fun ride. Special kids' suitcases, like "Trunkis," are designed with sturdy wheels and handles so young travelers can sit right on top of their luggage and scoot around or get towed through busy airport terminals!

6. Zipper locks use clever mechanical tumbler dials. Many travel suitcases feature built-in combination locks approved by airport security (called TSA locks). They hold the zipper pulls in place until you turn the number dials to align internal notches that release the metal latches.

7. Over 2 billion suitcases fly on airplanes every year. Worldwide, airport luggage systems handle billions of checked bags annually. Special underground tunnels beneath giant airports like London Heathrow contain miles of high-speed tracks that move suitcases at speeds over 20 miles per hour!
