Fun Facts

1. Miniature Ecosystems: A terrarium is essentially a tiny, self-contained garden grown inside a clear glass container, like a jar, bowl, or bottle.

2. Your Own Rain Cycle: Closed terrariums create their own tiny weather system! The water inside evaporates, hits the cool glass, turns into water droplets, and "rains" back down onto the plants in a continuous loop.

3. Plant Greenhouses: The clear glass lets sunlight in to warm up the air and help the plants grow, acting just like a mini greenhouse you can keep right on your bedroom desk.

4. Built in Layers: To make a healthy terrarium, you build it in layers: rocks at the very bottom for water drainage, a layer of charcoal to keep the air fresh, and then rich soil on top for the plants to dig their roots into.

5. Choose Small and Slow: The best plants for terrariums are small ones that love moisture and don't grow too fast, like tiny ferns, mosses, and slow-growing tropical houseplants.

6. Traveling Greenhouses: In the 1800s, people used large, sealed glass cases called Wardian cases to transport live plants safely across stormy oceans on ships without the salty sea spray killing them.

7. Victorian Accident: Terrariums were actually invented by accident in the 1820s! A British doctor named Nathaniel Ward put a moth chrysalis in a sealed glass jar with some dirt, and was amazed when a fern and some grass suddenly started growing inside.
