Fun Facts

1. Slinkys were invented by accident during a navy experiment. In 1943, naval engineer Richard James was designing special tension springs to stabilize delicate instruments on warships during high seas. When he accidentally knocked a spring off a shelf, he watched in awe as it neatly "walked" down a stack of books onto the floor!

2. The oldest known toys are thousands of years old. Archaeologists have discovered ancient dolls, toy carts, and carved wooden animals in Egyptian, Greek, and Roman tombs dating back over 4,000 years! Children in ancient times even played with mini clay yo-yos and spinning tops.

3. Play-Doh was originally created as wallpaper cleaner. Before becoming one of the world's favorite art toys, Play-Doh was sold in the 1930s as a pliable dough meant to wipe soot off coal-heated wallpaper. When a nursery school teacher realized kids loved rolling and shaping the soft dough, the manufacturer added bright colors and sold it as a toy!

4. Silly Putty was an accidental WWII rubber substitute. During World War II, rubber was in short supply, so a scientist mixed silicone oil with boric acid to create a synthetic rubber replacement. While it didn't work for truck tires, its ability to bounce, stretch, and snap made it a smash-hit toy!

5. Rubik's Cubes have over 43 quintillion possible combinations. The famous 3x3 puzzle cube invented by Ernő Rubik in 1974 has 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 unique arrangements! However, mathematicians proved that any scrambled cube can be solved in 20 moves or fewer (a number called "God's Number").

6. Teddy bears were named after President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1902, President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt went on a hunting trip and refused to shoot an injured, captive black bear because he thought it was unsportsmanlike. Cartoonists drew the story in newspapers, inspiring a Brooklyn shop owner to create stuffed plush bears called "Teddy's Bears"!

7. Super Soakers use compressed air to blast water. Invented by NASA engineer Lonnie Johnson while working on a heat pump system, the Super Soaker water gun works using pneumatic pressure. Pumping the handle forces air into an airtight water reservoir, creating high air pressure that propels a long stream of water when you pull the trigger!
