Fun Facts

1. The word "unicycle" means "one wheel." The name combines the prefix uni- (from Latin for "one") with cycle (from the Greek word kyklos, meaning "circle" or "wheel"). Unlike bicycles with two wheels or tricycles with three, a unicycle relies on just a single central wheel!

2. Unicycles were invented by accident from penny-farthing bicycles. In the late 1800s, people rode "penny-farthing" bicycles featuring a massive front wheel and a tiny back wheel. Riders noticed that as they leaned forward, the rear wheel lifted off the ground—inspiring daring cyclists to detach the back wheel entirely and balance on just the big front wheel!

3. "Giraffe" unicycles can stand over 10 feet tall! A giraffe unicycle uses a long vertical frame with a chain connecting high-mounted pedals down to the wheel axle. Because the seat sits way up in the air, riders must use momentum, acrobatics, or climb up a ladder just to mount the seat!

4. Unicycles have no chains or brakes. Unlike standard bicycles that use a metal chain and handlebars with handbrakes, a unicycle is a direct-drive machine! The pedals are attached directly to the axle of the wheel hub. To slow down or stop, the rider must apply back-pressure to the pedals using their own leg strength.

5. Unicyclists stay upright using continuous dynamic balance. Riding a unicycle is like balancing a broomstick on the tip of your finger! A unicyclist maintains their center of mass directly over the contact patch of the tire by constantly making tiny adjustments—pedaling slightly faster when falling forward and slowing down when leaning back.

6. There is a competitive sport called Unicycle Hockey. Unicycles aren't just for circus performers! Athletes around the world compete in intense team sports like Unicycle Hockey and Unicycle Basketball, maneuvering around courts, passing balls, and scoring goals while balancing on one wheel without touching the floor.

7. Extreme riders ride mountain unicycles down rocky trails. Mountain unicycling, or Muni, is an extreme sport where riders navigate rough forest trails, mud, and steep rocky drops! Muni unicycles feature extra-thick knobby tires, wide pedals for extra grip, and heavy-duty frame reinforcement to absorb high impacts.
