Fun Facts

1. America's Very First National Park: Yellowstone holds a huge historical title. Established way back in 1872 by President Ulysses S. Grant, it was officially named the first national park in the United States—and many people consider it the first national park in the entire world!

2. A Supervolcano Hideout: Beneath the beautiful trees and hiking trails lies a gigantic, sleeping volcano known as a "supervolcano." Don't worry, scientists monitor it closely—it hasn't had a massive eruption in about 70,000 years!

3. Home of Old Faithful: Yellowstone is most famous for its incredible geysers, which are like natural underground plumbing systems that blast boiling water high into the air. The most famous one is Old Faithful, which shoots water hundreds of feet into the sky on a very regular schedule.

4. Rainbow Hot Springs: The park is packed with colorful hot springs heated by underground volcanic magma. They look like giant rainbows because vibrant, heat-loving bacteria and algae grow in rings around the edges, creating brilliant shades of blue, green, orange, and yellow.

5. Spreading Across Three States: Yellowstone is massive! While most of the park is in the state of Wyoming, it is so big that it spills over into two neighboring states: Montana and Idaho.

6. A Real-Life Bison Highway: Yellowstone is one of the only places in the U.S. where wild American bison have lived continuously since ancient times. Today, thousands of them roam freely, and they sometimes cause traffic jams by blocking park roads!

7. Boiling Mud and Steaming Rivers: Besides geysers, the park is filled with bubbling "paint pots" (pools of hot, bubbling volcanic mud that sound like thick soup popping) and roaring waterfalls, like the stunning 300-foot-tall Yellowstone Falls.
